Textbook - Juntos (Prentice Hall)
Our textbook focuses on the five goals of communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. Communication is the main goal of second language learning and consists of four integral skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing with culture embedded in each skill. Through the study of a second language, students begin to understand and appreciate the diversity of the many cultures of people who speak the language (Cultures). Students also will access new information and explore issues related to many other subject areas (Connections). Studying a second language provides insight into other cultures and the nature of language (Comparisons). Finally, knowledge of a second language opens doors to a world of other multilingual communities, here and abroad (Communities).

In order to reach these goals, many different materials will be used. For example, videos, films, magazines, newspapers, taped stories, visual aids, and an exercise workbook will be incorporated into the course to help the students develop language skills that are useful to themselves and can be applied to various activities and disciplines. Each unit of study will include vocabulary, grammar exercises, some writing, some culture, some speaking, several projects, some listening comprehension exercises, and internet work.
Overview of first 9-weeks:
Syllabus: Spanish I Instructor: Mrs. Hickman Department: Foreign Language Course Title: Spanish I Course Number: 5166 Grades 9-11 Course ObjectiveTo increase the development and use of the four basic language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking; to create a vocabulary base; and to develop a greater appreciation for the cultures of Spanish-speaking societies. Course OutlineWe will cover approximately 12 chapters in the textbook during the course of the year which includes the following concepts: Basic conversational expressions, numbers, time, dates, alphabet, seasons and weather, present tense and preterit tense of regular and various irregular verbs, commands, subject pronouns, definite and indefinite articles, noun-adjective agreement, contractions with “a” and “de”, possessive adjectives, interrogatives, and vocabulary Course SuppliesMaterials provided by the school Textbook and activity workbook: JUNTOS UNO, Prentice Hall, 1997. Materials provided by the student *Activity workbooks must be purchased. The cost is $15.00 and can be purchased front eh school treasurer. Each student should have a three-ring binder, dividers, paper, folder, writing utensils, crayons or colored pencils for activities done in class. A Spanish/English dictionary *Each student is required to keep their graded assignments in a portfolio. It is your responsibility to bring in a folder for this and to put each new assignment in the portfolio.
GradingGrades are calculated by the point system. The average is determined by dividing the student’s accumulated points by the total possible points. The grading scale is as follows: A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 F Below 60 Make-up WorkIt is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher when he/she has been absent. Failure to do so will result in a “0”. http:// srahickman.orgIn case you are absent or forgot to write down homework assignments go to the above website or call Sra. Hickman @ 513-894-6727. Due to the fact that this is a college preparatory class, you will be expected to study at least 10-15 minutes each night in addition to any homework assigned. TutoringI will be available for any student needing extra help on Tuesday and Thursday after school in room 19. Please do not be afraid to speak up if you do not understand something. Spanish is like building blocks. If you miss class or are getting behind, you need to come in during this time to keep up with the pace because everything builds on each other. Let me know in advance if you cannot come on Tuesday or Thursday and I will find time to help you out. Tardies You are to be in your seat when the bell rings. The school tardy policy will be observed.
Expectations· Be respectful, polite and kind to others at all times · Raise your hand to speak · Listen to instructions · Bring materials to class with you everyday · Be ready to work as soon as the bell rings · No food, candy, or gum allowed in class (unless we have a class designated fiesta) LanguageYou will be expected to speak Spanish in this class. If you cannot communicate in Spanish, raise your hand to get permission to speak or ask a question in English. Only at that time will students be allowed to speak in English.
